A Welcome Distraction

A Welcome Distraction (orig. published 4.16.11)

Day 4 - Shriners Hospital - Philadelphia

Breakthrough! Colson slept all night last night with no inturruptions, which also means he went all night without any medication. Amazing. Absolutely amazing. If I were anywhere near his condition, I wouldn't have made it through the night without being medicated. Heavily.

Upon waking up he also immediately requested water. Water!? Is this the same boy who hated the world and hated water and hated food and hated everything the past couple of days? I couldn't believe what I was hearing so I, being of sound mind and body (and also having recently awoken from sound sleep) did what any mother would do. I laid in bed and stared at him. Because, you know. THAT'S productive.

He informed he wanted water again, so finally believing him I got up and got him some. He drank the entire sippy cup of water within an hour. He hadn't had a full sippy cup of water in the total of the past two days. This was amazing. I was SO PROUD! He also asked for food. Food!? He wants to eat! (Looking around frantically for something, anything, a freaking crumb!) What just happened overnight here? What did I miss. Where's the Colson I know and yes still love, from the past two days? This is great. Love this Colson even more.

Going for an early morning walk - He's actually saying cheese here!

Bumpa came today! Hooray! He was a welcome distraction, and a neutral force for the most part. Bumpa brought Colson an AWESOME Spiderman action figure that really webs people and says such educational things as "With great power comes great responsibility!". He also enjoys hanging from the window in our room and looking over Philly's rooftops, which quite coincedentally are PERFECT for Spiderman antics like building jumping. These rooftops are straight from the comic books. Spiderman is just itching to get out there and "Lets go round up some bad guys!"

Your friendly neighborhood Spiderman

Bumpa and Colson had a really wonderful day together today. They played video games a lot, which they both love. Colson was the person who moved the guy around, and Bumpa was the one who would blast the bad guys. They both saved all the villagers in Ratchet and Crank, raced cars in Gran Turismo, and had a good time jumping off cliffs and light sabering each other (Colson! Leave R2D2 alone!) in Lego Star Wars. They had a great time reading books earlier in the day together and Colson's overall improved mood was appreciated by everyone. Trust me. Just ask all the patients, nurses, doctors, food service and cleaning employees on the 5th floor.

Telling stories with Bumpa

A little Gran Turismo

Reading about a mouse who ate so much his belly got really big!

Thanks for the visit Bumpa, we all had a really great day with you!

Colson is healing really well. After just minutes ago witnessing and partaking in a three person diaper change, I'm now going to lay awake and ponder exactly how we're going to make it at home when just one of us is home at a time. Anyone want to come live with us for the next six weeks? Seriously. There's free entertainment every night (trust me, Cayleigh is a lunatic). Two more days until we get to see our Sunshine girl!

Much love.
